William Seymour was born into slavery in Louisiana in 1870. He was raised in a Christian home, and he came to faith in Jesus Christ at an early age. In 1898, he moved to Los Angeles, where he joined the First African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In 1906, Seymour began to experience the baptism in the Holy Spirit. He began to speak in tongues, and he preached with a power and passion that had never been seen before. Within a short time, Seymour's ministry had attracted a large following. In 1906, he opened the Azusa Street Mission, which became the epicenter of the Pentecostal revival.
