Ernest Shackleton: The Extraordinary Explorer Who Conquered Antarctica

Ernest Shackleton was born in Ireland in 1874. He was the second of ten children. His father was a doctor, and his mother was a devout Christian. Shackleton was a sickly child, and he spent much of his time reading and dreaming of adventure.
When Shackleton was 16, he joined the British merchant navy. He quickly rose through the ranks, and by the age of 24, he was a captain. In 1901, Shackleton led his first expedition to the Antarctic. The expedition was a success, and Shackleton returned to England a hero.
The Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition
In 1914, Shackleton led his second expedition to the Antarctic. The goal of the expedition was to cross the continent from one side to the other. The expedition was a disaster. The ship, the Endurance, was crushed by pack ice, and Shackleton and his crew were stranded on the ice.
