In the summer of 1936, the world was on the brink of war. The Nazis had come to power in Germany, and they were using the upcoming Olympic Games in Berlin to showcase their Aryan superiority. But nine young Americans were determined to prove that they were the best in the world, no matter what.

These nine Americans were:

  • Jesse Owens, track and field
  • Ralph Metcalfe, track and field
  • Eulace Peacock, track and field
  • Mack Robinson, track and field
  • Cornelius Johnson, track and field
  • Archie Williams, track and field
  • Forrest Towns, track and field
  • John Woodruff, track and field
  • David Albritton, track and field

These nine men came from different backgrounds, but they all shared a common goal: to win gold at the Olympics. They trained hard, and they were determined to succeed. And succeed they did.

At the Olympics, the Americans dominated the track and field events. Owens won four gold medals, in the 100 meters, 200 meters, long jump, and 4x100 meter relay. Metcalfe won two gold medals, in the 100 meters and 200 meters. Peacock won a gold medal in the 200 meters. Robinson won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter relay. Johnson won a gold medal in the 4x100 meter relay. Williams won a gold medal in the 400 meters. Towns won a gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles. Woodruff won a gold medal in the 800 meters. And Albritton won a gold medal in the pole vault.

The Americans' success at the Olympics was a major embarrassment for the Nazis. They had hoped to use the Games to prove their Aryan superiority, but the Americans had shown that they were the best in the world. The Americans' victory was a major blow to Nazi propaganda, and it helped to inspire people around the world who were fighting against fascism.
