The early years of the Braves were marked by success. The team won the National League pennant in 1872, and again in 1873, 1874, and 1875. In 1876, the Braves won the first World Series, defeating the St. Louis Browns 4-0.
The Braves continued to be a competitive team in the early 20th century, winning the National League pennant in 1914. However, the team went into a decline in the 1920s and 1930s.
Chapter 2: The Glory Days
The Braves returned to glory in the 1940s and 1950s. The team won the National League pennant in 1948, and again in 1957 and 1958. The Braves also won the World Series in 1957, defeating the Milwaukee Braves 4-3.
The Braves' success in the 1940s and 1950s was due in large part to a core group of players that included Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Warren Spahn.
Aaron is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time. He holds the MLB record for career home runs (755) and RBIs (2,297). Mathews was a five-time All-Star and a three-time Gold Glove winner. Spahn was a 13-time All-Star and a three-time Cy Young Award winner.
Chapter 3: The Lean Years
The Braves' success in the 1940s and 1950s came to an end in the 1960s. The team went into a decline that lasted for nearly two decades.
The Braves moved to Atlanta in 1966, but the team continued to struggle. The Braves did not have a winning season from 1966 to 1981.
There were a number of factors that contributed to the Braves' decline in the 1960s and 1970s. The team lost several key players, and the organization made some poor decisions in the draft.
Chapter 4: The Return to Glory
The Braves returned to glory in the 1990s. The team won the National League pennant in 1991, 1992, 1995, 1996, and 1999. The Braves also won the World Series in 1995, defeating the Cleveland Indians 4-2.
The Braves' success in the 1990s was due in large part to a core group of players that included Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, and John Smoltz.
Maddux is considered one of the greatest pitchers of all time. He won four Cy Young Awards with the Braves, and was a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
Glavine is a two-time Cy Young Award winner and a five-time All-Star. Smoltz is a three-time Cy Young Award winner and a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
The Atlanta Braves have a long and storied history. The team has won 18 National League pennants and four World Series championships.
