Born into a noble family in 1537, Lady Jane Grey was a precocious and intelligent young woman. She was well-educated and fluent in several languages. However, her life took a dramatic turn when she was chosen to be the successor to King Edward VI, her cousin. Edward was dying of tuberculosis, and he wanted to prevent his half-sister, Mary Tudor, a devout Catholic, from inheriting the throne.

Lady Jane's reign was short-lived. Mary Tudor had a strong claim to the throne, and she was supported by the majority of the English people. After just nine days, Lady Jane was deposed and imprisoned in the Tower of London. She was executed in 1554, at the age of just 17.
