After graduation, Truman worked at a variety of jobs, including a bank clerk, a timekeeper, and a farmer. In 1906, he married Elizabeth Wallace. The couple had one daughter, Mary Margaret.

In 1917, Truman joined the Missouri National Guard. He served in France during World War I. After the war, Truman returned to Independence and entered politics. In 1944, Truman was elected Vice President of the United States. He became President in 1945 after the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman served as President during the end of World War II and the beginning of the Cold War. He also oversaw the Truman Doctrine, which provided aid to Greece and Turkey to prevent them from falling to communism.

Truman left office in 1953. He returned to Independence and wrote his memoirs. Truman died in 1972 at the age of 88.
