He also oversaw the Truman Doctrine, which provided aid to Greece and Turkey to prevent them from falling to communism.

Truman left office in 1953. He returned to Independence and wrote his memoirs. Truman died in 1972 at the age of 88.

Truman's childhood home is located at 219 North Delaware Street in Independence, Missouri. The home is a two-story, frame house. It was built in 1867 by Truman's grandfather, Anderson Shipp Truman. Truman's family lived in the home from 1885 to 1901.
