The Winnipeg Jets were a professional ice hockey team based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. They played in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 1979 to 1996. The team was founded as the Atlanta Flames in 1972, but relocated to Winnipeg in 1990. The Jets played their home games at the Winnipeg Arena.

The Jets were a successful team in their early years, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals in 1985 and 1990. However, the team's fortunes declined in the early 1990s, and they were eventually sold and moved to Phoenix in 1996.

The Early Years

The Atlanta Flames were founded in 1972 as part of the NHL's expansion into the Sun Belt. The team was owned by Tom Cousins, a real estate developer, and played its home games at the Omni Coliseum.

The Flames struggled in their early years, failing to make the playoffs in their first three seasons. However, the team began to improve in the mid-1970s, led by star players such as Bobby Hull, Eric Vail, and Tom Lysiak.

In 1979, the Flames reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time in franchise history. They lost to the Montreal Canadiens in four games, but the appearance in the Finals was a sign of the team's progress.

The Move To Winnipeg

In 1980, the Flames were sold to a group of investors led by Canadian businessman Nelson Skalbania. Skalbania moved the team to Winnipeg in 1990, where they were renamed the Jets.

The Jets were a popular team in Winnipeg, and they quickly became a contender in the NHL. In 1990, the Jets reached the Stanley Cup Finals for the second time in franchise history. They lost to the Edmonton Oilers in four games, but the appearance in the Finals was a sign of the team's success.

The Decline

The Jets' success continued in the early 1990s, but the team began to decline in the mid-1990s. The team was sold to a group of investors led by Barry Shenkarow in 1995, and the team's fortunes continued to decline.

In 1996, the Jets were sold again, this time to a group of investors led by Richard Burke. Burke moved the team to Phoenix, Arizona, where they were renamed the Coyotes.

The Legacy

The Winnipeg Jets were a popular and successful team during their time in the NHL. The team reached the Stanley Cup Finals twice, and they were always a contender for the playoffs.

The Jets' legacy continues to live on in Winnipeg. The team's former home arena, the Winnipeg Arena, is now known as the Bell MTS Place and is home to the Winnipeg Jets of the American Hockey League (AHL).

The Jets' logo and colors are still used by the AHL team, and the team's former players are still remembered by fans in Winnipeg.
