In the early morning hours of August 6, 1945, the world changed forever. The United States dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, killing an estimated 140,000 people. Three days later, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing another 70,000 people.

The Atomic Times is a memoir by Tsutomu Yamaguchi, one of the few people who survived both bombings. In this excerpt, Yamaguchi describes the moment the bomb hit Hiroshima:

I was on my way to work when I saw a bright flash in the sky. I looked up and saw a mushroom cloud rising above the city. I knew instantly that it was an atomic bomb.

I ran for cover, but it was too late. The blast wave hit me and knocked me unconscious. When I woke up, I was lying in the street, covered in blood and debris.

I looked around and saw that the city was in ruins. Buildings had been flattened, and fires were burning everywhere. I could hear the screams of the injured and dying.

I knew that I had to get out of there, so I started to walk. I walked for hours, until I finally reached my home. My family was there, and they were all alive.

We were lucky to have survived the bombing, but we knew that our lives would never be the same.

The Atomic Times is a powerful and moving account of one man's experience of the atomic bombings. It is a story of survival, resilience, and hope.
